Statement on the launch of the Online Fraud Charter from Mike Haley, CEO of Cifas
1 December 2023
We welcome the launch of the government’s Online Fraud Charter, which along with the Online Safety Act 2023, forms part of an essential response to the scale of abuse of online platforms to facilitate fraud. Our own data, as published in our annual Fraudscape Report shows the extent of the problem – 86% of identity fraud and a high proportion of young money mule recruitment occurs through online channels.
The Charter commits signatories to sharing information and intelligence quickly to prevent and detect fraud and better protect consumers and businesses.
As the UK's leading fraud prevention service, managing the largest database of instances of fraudulent conduct in the country, we look forward to engaging with online platforms to bring them into our unique cross-sector community, which covers 700 organisations, including the banks and telcos. In line with this, we back the call from our partners at Which? to bring together data from big tech, banks, telcos and internet infrastructure providers to create an “impenetrable barrier to protect consumers from online organised crime.
